Hyderabad: Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) has taken a pledge to plant and nurture as many trees as possible, reduce global warming and protect Mother Earth through its initiatives like ‘Vana Deeksha’ and ‘Vana Prasadam’.

The HMR authorities said that their initiative got a further boost with the State government taking up the ambitious ‘Telangana Ku Haritha Haram’ programme. Under ‘Vana Deeksha’ programme, HMRL took up avenue plantation and 4 lakh saplings have been planted since 2012. Another 1.15 lakh saplings would be planted by July 11 as part of the mega ‘25 lakh saplings plantation programme’.

Under ‘Vana Prasadam’ programme 38,000 saplings were distributed to senior citizens, students, housewives and various residential localities. Nearly 50,000 shrubs have been planted and maintained for developing the green belt along the Metro Rail corridors, depot lands and stations.

HMR removed 4,453 trees for creating Right of Way (RoW) for Metro Rail project by taking clearance from forest department under the WALTA Act. But it has more than compensated for it by translocating 2015 trees, planting 5.03 lakh saplings and distributing 38,000 saplings. This works out to 120 saplings planted for each tree removed.
