Hyderabad: Driving in the city for the past one month has become a tormenting experience for motorists as several bike riders have been complaining of frequent fall due to the uneven and eroded roads. Adding to their woes has been the slow movement of traffic during peak hours due to these undulations.

In December last, the State government had approved the proposal of Corporation for repair of roads, but works have hardly progressed. Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation officials said they have been spending Rs 326 crore to take up repair works on 921 identified stretches covering 721 km in the city.

Officials claimed that they had finished 90 per cent of the road repairing works, but in reality the poor condition of these roads raised several questions.

Due to road cuttings and restoration works carried out by various line departments such as Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board, thanks to the Southern Power Distribution Company of Telangana Limited (TSSPDCL) and Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) in particular, most important arterial roads have lost their surface uniformity giving rise to bumps and undulations, causing great discomfort to road users.

The stretch from Jubilee Hills Road 44 to Mastan Nagar in Jubilee Hills Road No 45 suffered severe damage due to the recent rainfall. Roads in several busy stretches, including Panjagutta, Begumpet, Himayathnagar, Mettuguda, Adikmet and Osmania University, Kukatpally and other areas in the city are no different.

R Praveen Suri, Administrative Officer working in a private hospital said, "The civic body has recently laid a road on the busy Begumpet stretch. I feel that the quality of this freshly laid road is highly substandard as it has been damaged due to the moderate rainfall in the city over the past one week."

Recounting his painful fall, Yousuf Pasha, a private school teacher, said he became a victim while riding his motorcycle at Mastan Nagar in Jubilee Hills Road No. 45.

In the last two years, the black top road patch repairs have been attended only to the extent of damaged portions by HMRL. When the questioned about the issue, a GHMC official said, "We are carrying out pothole filling and road repairs on a daily basis. We are preparing plans to completely solve all road-related issues in the city as soon as possible. As of now, we are carrying out only temporary repairs.”
