Nizamabad: Agriculture Minister Pocharam Srinivasa Reddy on Saturday inspected Harita Haram works going on in Jankampeta, Anksapur, Morthaad and Velpur mandals and planted saplings on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion, he said that plants release oxygen into air absorbing the carbon dioxide which we exhale. Daily each person needs three cylinders of oxygen, which costs about Rs 2100. It works out to Rs 7.86 lakh per annum, he added.

The Minister expressed concern over not realising the value of trees since we are getting oxygen free. Humanity would be in peril with the increasing levels of carbon dioxide in atmosphere in the absence of trees, he warned.

The tree would help attract clouds leading to rainfall. The last two years of drought is due to the shrinking forest cover. That was why the State government decided to plant 230 crore saplings in three years, he said.

Minister Pocharam said that to achieve the goal of planting 11.50 crore saplings in three years in the district, everyone in the district should plant at least 12 saplings. To reap the benefits of Bangaru Telangana projects, the forest cover should be 33 per cent, he said adding that every sapling planted should be protected. Besides backyard gardening, the people should resort to block-planting and planting of teak stumps on farm bunds.
