Hyderabad: In a move to educate students about the road safety and traffic rules, the Telangana government has decided to introduce various topics on road safety, traffic awareness and also the essence of emergency services for Classes I to VIII students from this academic year.

Awakened after the tragic death of nine-year-old Ramya, her uncle and grandfather in a ghastly road accident in the city recently, the State government is now keen to create awareness among students on traffic rules, effective use of emergency services and the functioning of civic body officials.

Recently, the traffic police along with the Education department and State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) had held meetings on framing the topics.

Speaking to The Hans India, Additional Commissioner (Traffic) Jitender said, “Meetings have been held recently to discuss the topics that have to be included. Apart from topics on traffic awareness and Motor Vehicles Act, the functionality of emergency departments like fire services, ambulance and disaster response will also be added.”

Stating that topics would be included in the syllabus keeping in mind the ability of students to understand these topics at different levels, the commissioner said, “The death of Ramya and her relatives in a road mishap, in which a youth was driving the car under influence of alcohol, has reminded us the necessity to teach children about road sense and safety at an early age,” said another official.

The SCERT officials said new topics would be finalised within a month and teachers would also be trained under ToT (Training of Trainers) program to coach children better. “Additional topics will be given added a supplement to schools for this year for students of Class I to VIII. From next year, they will be added in the curriculum. Teachers will also be trained in these topics,” said SCERT officials.
