Hyderabad: Justice T Sunil Chowdary of the High Court at Hyderabad found fault with the State Agriculture department for its failure to protect the cotton farmers from the clutches of unscrupulous seed companies, and expressed displeasure over the government’s inability to make the errant companies pay compensation to the affected farmers.

The judge was dealing with a petition filed by J Sriranga Rao of Bharatiya Kisan Sangh and four others. The petitioners complained that farmers in Vikarabad, Pudur and Nawabpet mandals in Ranga Reddy district who had sown two varieties of Mahyco’s cotton seeds, known as MRC 7383 and Passion BG-II seeds, had suffered crop failures and losses.

Appearing for the petitioners, B Rachna Reddy informed the court that the company, Maharashtra Hybrid Seeds Co Private Ltd (Mahyco) canvassed that its seeds were high yielding and promised that they would fetch farmers’ good cotton crop.

She informed the Bench that a survey had held faulty seeds for the loss of crop. The district administration had directed the company to pay a compensation of Rs 47 lakh to 97 farmers. She informed the Bench that no amount had been paid till date.

“Why they should be victimised all the time. Why can’t you act in a stern manner against errant companies? If they don’t pay, attach their assets, the judge told the State counsel.

Farmers in India are the most exploited since they are the most unorganised ones,” Justice Sunil Chowdary asked the counsel for the State government. The judge directed the government to ensure that the company paid the amount within one month.
