Hyderabad: The indifferent attitude of the officials of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to clear heaps of garbage near Gautham Nagar railway gate has been rued by the residents, as this place has become an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes and houseflies.

With rains lashing the city every other day, the stench emanating from the rotting garbage dump has been giving sleepless nights to residents. Parents are afraid that their wards could contract communicable diseases as the rain water from the garbage pile trickles down to nearby residential areas and gets accumulated as puddles.

Several residents said the failure of GHMC officials to provide adequate garbage bins in the area had resulted in the crisis. In the absence of bins, some residents and shopkeepers were throwing trash in the open area near the railway gate. They said that their woes double whenever it rains or drizzles, as the garbage decomposed lets out noxious stench.

“Whenever I see people with trash, I ensure that they do not throw it in the open space. But I alone can’t keep a vigil all the time,” said K Venkatesh, a resident. As the garbage is not lifted frequently, the space has become a breeding place for mosquitoes and flies. “Mosquitoes are aplenty in this area. We do not open our doors fearing the mosquitoes and flies,” said B Raju, a resident who stays close to the railway track.

Adding to their woes, commuters relieve themselves in the open space. “There are no GHMC toilets in the area. As a result, some shopkeepers and commuters who pass through this place relieve themselves here. We are not able to do anything about this,” said Shravan Kumar, an MNC employee and a resident of Gautham Nagar.

The residents living in this area lamented that several representations requesting more trash bins fell on deaf ears. They wanted the civic body to immediately resolve the issue before their health takes a beating.
