​Warangal: A Pakistani national, Md Arshad Mahamood who was lodged at Warangal Central Prison on espionage charges, was released from the jail on Tuesday following completion of his conviction term. However, he was detained at the Central jail following his release for want of deportation orders. The State government on Tuesday issued a GO RT No 533 permitting the Commissioner of Police, Hyderabad city to detain the Pakistani.

On April 30, 2009, Arshad Mahamood, a native of Khanpur, Khatora of Raheemyarkhan district in Pakistan was convicted by first additional metropolitan sessions court, Hyderabad, under relevant sections of Foreigners Act and Official Secrets Act and Section 120-B of the IPC and sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment (RI) for 14 years.

He was also convicted on other grounds and sentenced to undergo RI for five years and 14 years respectively and all the sentences were to run simultaneously while setting off the remand period from March 10, 2004 to till April 30, 2009. He was due for release on Tuesday.

The superintendent of Central prison requested the police to depute personnel to take him into custody for deportation as per rules, in response to which CP Hyderabad City asked the government to issue orders for detaining Mahamood at the Central prison till arrangements for his consular access and deportation orders were made.

As per rules, Mahamood has to be provided with consular access to establish his identity. If his identity was established, then he would be issued one way travel document by the Pakistani High Commission to leave for Pakistan. The Pakistani was released at around 3.30 pm from the jail and was taken back to the prison at 7.30 pm.
