Hyderabad: Despite tall claims by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) of taking up major reforms and modernising garbage collection system in the city, it seems to have failed to eliminate vulnerable garbage points or what is known as open dumping of garbage.

The menace is back and residents in several areas complain that it was leading to lot of inconvenience. They say that the scheme of door-to-door garbage collection had become irregular.

K Pavitra, a resident of Yousufguda said that the auto tippers and tricycles which were designated to pick door-to-door garbage were coming once in week. “How can residents keep huge piles of garbage in their houses for days together when it emanates foul smell?

Besides this, two dustbins to segregate dry and wet garbage separately become full and the residents have no choice but to dump it on the roadside,” she said.

She said the GHMC had fixed Rs 50 per month for the swachh auto tipper driver. “But after few months the drivers started demanding Rs 300 to Rs 500 per month to pick the garbage from our homes which we cannot afford,” says Syed Rubeena, a Tolichowki resident.

She said that the despite several complaints to sanitary supervisors and sanitary field assistants there has been no response from them.

When asked about it a senior GHMC official told The Hans India that it was a fact that the dumping of garbage on roads was back.

“We have taken note of this problem and the Corporation has decided to conduct a comprehensive study of the reasons for the re-emergence of dumping points in all circles.

Stating that garbage dumps have been mostly found near transformers, The official said the GHMC was looking into the reasons for the failure of the auto trolley drivers not collecting garbage on regular basis.

He said there have complaints that the auto trolleys are being used for other purposes by the drivers.
It may be mentioned here that the civic body officials as part of 100 day action plan earlier this year had identified as many as 1,116 open dumping points in 24 circles.

GHMC commissioner B Janardhan Reddy in May announced that the corporation had eliminated all such points across the city.
