The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday arrested four officials of the postal department for their role in the irregularities in carrying out the exchange of new currency notes in lieu of demonetised currency notes.

​Hyderabad: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday arrested four officials of the postal department for their role in the irregularities in carrying out the exchange of new currency notes in lieu of demonetised currency notes.

The arrested officials include – Shaik Abdul Ghani, G Ravi Teja, K Suresh Kumar and G Srinivas, while several others are absconding.

The CBI conducted searches in 11 places and seized incriminating documents, laptops, mobile phones and cash to the tune of Rs 17.02 lakh in new currency notes of Rs 2,000 denomination from the accused.

Meanwhile, sources said the CBI has also inspected Kandukuru post office in Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh following allegations of misappropriation of new currency notes.

According to the CBI, the accused postal officials have resorted to misappropriation to the tune of Rs 2.95 crore. The money was handed over to some private persons by the main accused K Sudheer Babu.

Sudheer Babu, senior superintendent of post offices, Hyderabad city division misused the new currency notes meant for disbursement to the general public at various post offices under his control.

In collusion with a few sub-post masters and other staff, he diverted the new currency notes to some private persons on commission basis.

The CBI has identified misappropriation at Himayatnagar, Golconda and Karwan Sahu sub-post offices during its investigation.

Apart from Sudheer Babu, sub-post masters G Revathi of Himayatnagar, M Govinda Rao of Golconda and P Sampath Kumar of Karwan Sahu post offices,

cash overseer Syed Etheshamuddin are absconding in the three cases registered by the CBI so far.
