The objective is to move towards a ‘Cashless Telangana’ by imparting digital financial literacy to merchants and the citizens. The logo of Cashless Digithon was launched on Thursday by IT Secretary Jayesh Ranjan, Mee Seva Commissioner Venkateshwarlu, TITA global president Sundeep Kumar Makthala and IIIT VC S Sathya Narayana.

Sundeep Kumar told the media that lack of awareness of digital financial literacy, especially among the rural population, was a major challenge in the country, particularly in light of the Centre’s recent demonetisation and plans to make India a cashless economy.

There was an urgent need to create awareness among the citizens, especially in rural and semi-urban areas, regarding digital finance services and extend support in access to digital finance services options. The aim of Cashless Digithon was to enroll and impart digital financial literacy to merchants and citizens with the help of 11,000 Digithon Digital Leaders across all panchayats in the State.

The objective was to make Telangana a cashless State by hosting awareness sessions on government policies and digital finance options available for rural citizens and supporting in use of various mechanisms of digital finance services such as IMPS (immediate payment service), UPI (unified payment interface) and Bank PoS(point of sale) machines, etc. by various stakeholders.

The project would involve functionaries of the State Government/District Administration; NIC- SIO/DIO Banks,and Panchayats, It would also cover agencies such as Merchant Associations, Market Yards ,Traders etc. and communities such as semi urban and rural population, schools and colleges as well as women, farmers and marginalized sections.

TITA would also organise local level marathons, competitions, Radio/TV talk shows, etc. The focus would be to enable citizens to access and use electronic payment system (EPS), sensitising and enabling merchants at panchayat level to use EPS and creating awareness in rural Telangana, he said. TITA vice-president Rana Pratap, PRO Ramesh Podishetti and executive member Raju K were among the others who participated in the event.
