Temple Assets Management turns unmanageable in Telangana State

Hyderabad: The Telangana State Endowment’s department is reportedly groping in the dark about the exact extent and figures of the assets belonging to the Hindu Religious Institutions (HRIs). In turn, this is affecting the government’s move to streamline the Temple Asset Management (TAM).
Speaking to The Hans India, a senior official pointed out that there are two to three versions in regard to the HRI assets and officials are clueless in squaring up several loose ends to arrive at exact figures, he pointed out. As per one version, as per a 1990’s estimate in United Andhra Pradesh the HRI assets were pegged at 4 lakh acres. Of this, nearly 48 per cent were reportedly belongs to various HRIs located in Telangana. Thus, roughly, it comes to around 1.8 lakh acres.
But, another estimate after the bifurcation of the United AP puts the HRI assets at a little less than one lakh acres. Out of this, 75 per cent have been are reportedly shown as being encroached. When contacted, sources in the revenue department pointed out that until 2005 there were large-scale alienation of HRI lands. And, alienation of HRI lands for a song by the people in the power for a song has come to a halt when government’s wings were clipped following a judgment by the State High Court.
“Alienation of lands during the 10 years of intervening period from 1990’s estimate and 2005 could be the reason for the difference between the two versions of assets estimation,” they added. However, even when a property was alienated the department should have records of the same and the way it has been carried out, the revenue sources clarified.
The endowment department has different kinds of lands like dry, wet and forest lands. The same is being disclosed under section 22-A (1) (c) and (e) of the Registration Act, 1908 for prohibition of any transactions in regard to those properties. But, even in this case the department officials gloss over the status of the properties like under litigation, lease fixed, names of the persons for whom properties are leased out and names of the encroachers of the HRI lands.
