Air travellers at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Shamshabad on Saturday witnessed an unexpected windfall at the ATM which disbursed new Rs 500 denomination notes instead of Rs 100 notes.

The ATM belonging to Kotak Mahindra Bank had a serious glitch providing Rs 500 instead of Rs 100 notes and the passengers lined up at the ATM for withdrawals. In a matter of an hour, nearly Rs 8 lakh was withdrawn from the machine.

The authorities at the airport informed the bank officials after inquiring into the surprising rush and staff from the bank reached the airport to shut it down temporarily.

The airport officials said that a passenger withdrew Rs 2,500 but got Rs 4,500 instead due to the technical error in the machine which disbursed one Rs 2,000 denomination note and five Rs 500 denomination notes instead of five Rs 100s.

It is learnt that the outsourcing staff of the ATM maintenance agency had mistakenly Rs 500 denominations in the Rs 100 slot. However, the excess amount withdrawn by customers will be recovered as per the transactions made with the account of the customer.
