Hyderabad: Health Minister C Laxma Reddy on Tuesday assured the State Assembly that the government would provide necessary medical support to the patients who had lost their eye sight after undergoing eye surgeries at Sarojini Devi Eye hospital in July.

Replying to a question, the Minister said the unfortunate incident happened due to the usage of contaminated “Ringer Lactate Solution” during the surgeries.

The Minister said that besides blacklisting a Nagpur based company which had supplied the solution, cases have been filed under relevant provisions of Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940.

He said these patients were under treatment and the government hopes that they will regain their vision soon. He said while he was not supporting the incident, few infections out of 1000 surgeries were within the limits of World Health Organisation (WHO) standards.

Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital carries out about 50,000 eye surgeries annually and the incident is to be seen as an exception, he added.

Following the incident, the Minister said steps have been taken to prevent reoccurrence of similar incidents. Congress MLA G Chinna Reddy said that the ‘Ringer Lactate Solution’ has been banned in West Bengal.

But, the same was being used in the State and demanded the government to compensate the loss caused to the affected patients and provide pensions to those who lost their eye sight.
