Hyderabad: The High Court at Hyderabad sought the views of the Central government on the proposal to enhance the amount of fine to be levied on those who do not wear helmet while driving a two-wheeler.

The division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Ramesh Ranganathan and Justice Shameem Akther on Wednesday posed this question while hearing a case filed by Vudataneni Rama Rao of Ranga Reddy district seeking direction to the two State governments to implement Section 129 of the Motor Vehicles Act and Rules 430 and 486 of the Andhra Pradesh Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989.

The bench was informed by the Government Pleaders that the fines were too meagre and that they had written to the Central government to amend the Act to enhance the fine amounts. The Centre was yet to take a decision on this although it had sought views from all the States on this issue.

The bench directed the petitioner to implead the Central government as a respondent and sought the response of the Centre on the issue by the time of next hearing, three weeks later.
