Hyderabad: Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is all set to launch first ever electronic toilets in the city on Friday at Charminar.

Electronic toilets or e-toilets are modular, pre-fabricated public toilets integrated with user-friendly interfaces to ensure cleanliness and hygiene.

The corporation is planning to set up about 20 e-toilets at several historical places including Golconda during phase I.

The e-toilets have been sponsored by State Bank of Hyderabad, Indian Oil Corporation, Telangana Apex Co-operative Bank, Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences and several other corporate companies under corporate social responsibility (CSR).

GHMC commissioner B Janardhan Reddy said that the corporation would install as many as 26 e-toilets during phase I. He said that e-toilets would be placed in historical places to facilitate the tourists.

The GHMC commissioner further said that corporation would set up e-toilets at General Bazar, Koti Women's college, Gandhi Hospital, and in all IT corridors.

He said that the toilets used for men would be procured at the cost of Rs 6.35 lakh and for women it will be Rs 7.30 lakh. He said that Mayor B Ram Mohan and other public representatives would inaugurate the first e-toilet today.

Janardhan Reddy said that the e-toilets would be power efficient and have coin operated entry, onsite waste treatment using anaerobic bio-degradation and will also consume less water.

He also said that the e-toilets do not require regular manual cleaning and maintenance. He said that the corporation would generate revenue through advertisements for which the space would be available.

The e-toilet would be equipped with automatic self-flushing and self-cleaning mechanisms. The unmanned and automated e-toilets would have remote monitoring capabilities and their health status can be tracked through web.

The e-toilets would be incorporated with a full-cycle approach in sustainable sanitation by integrating electrical, mechanical and web-mobile technologies which control the entry, usage, cleaning with remote monitoring capabilities.
