Hyderabad: Notwithstanding the claims of the government that the ground water levels have increased substantially and that the water bodies got recharged under the Mission Kakatiya, majority municipalities in Telangana are heading for a drinking water shortage this summer. Daily water supply has already been affected in many urban local bodies in the state.

Out of the 67 municipalities, only 14 municipalities are being supplied drinking water on daily basis. Jangaon, Siricilla, Sattupally, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Sangareddy, Siddipet, Gajwel and Metapally are among the municipalities which are getting daily water supply.

On the other hand, most municipalities in Ranga Reddy, Nalgonda, Mahbubnagar, Medak, Karimnagar, Suryapet, Khammam, Nagarkurnool, Kamareddy, Bhupalpally, Adilabad, Medchal and Peddapally are being supplied drinking water on alternate days.

State Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MAUD) department officials said in view of the scarcity of water, the quantity of water being supplied to each household has been reduced to 44 litres per capita per day (LPCD) from 100 LPCD in the municipalities covered under daily water supply.

The officials said groundwater levels and water bodies have started depleting in the dry land areas. People living in 33 ULBs have been getting water every alternate day. The rate of supply was only 10 to 15 LPCD to 56 LPCD depending on water availability from both surface and power bores. Supplies have been reduced by more than 40 per cent due to depletion of water sources, they said.

The municipalities covered under once in three day water supply are – Warangal, Jammikunta, Husnabad, Pedda Amberpeta, Bhongir, Sadasivapet, Korutla, Nalgonda, Achampet, Ibrahimpatnam, Miryalaguda, Shadnagar, Wanaparthy and Yellandu. The rate of water supply was 10 LPCD to 49 LPCD as there was reduction of more than 50 per cent of water supply.

The sources said that according to reports from Devarakonda, Bellampally and Mahbubnagar, water is being supplied once in four days only where the LPCD rate of supply was 11 to 17. The reduction of water supply in the urban areas was nearly 60 per cent.

The officials said the Irrigation department has been requested to release water from the rivers to fill the nearby tanks to meet drinking water requirements. Arrangements are being made for the supply of water from the Kakatiya canal of the SRSP to Jagityal, Korutla and Metpalli municipalities.
