Hyderabad: Who is more democratic – Telangana State or AP government? This was the issue that dominated discussions in the lobbies of State Assembly on Wednesday. The Opposition parties felt that the Chair was not giving adequate time to them. The issue was raised by Leader of Opposition K Jana Reddy in the Assembly on Wednesday.

Jana Reddy took objection over the manner in which Deputy Speaker Padma Devender Reddy denying the Opposition members time during the debate on Demands for Grants on Tuesday and said that the mikes were switched off abruptly when the members were speaking. He termed it as sheer discrimination against the Opposition. BJP floor leader G Kishen Reddy also Tprotested saying that his mike was also withdrawn half-way through.

Coming to the defence of the Chair, Minister for Legislative Affairs T Harish Rao gave the details of time allotted to the Opposition members party-wise as compared to that of the ruling party. The Speaker also advised the members not to make any allegations against the Chair.

Harish Rao went a step further in defending the actions of the Chair by remarking that the Chair and the government were very liberal in the State. In the neighbouring AP State, the mike of Leader of Opposition Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy was being repeatedly switched off but here the Leader of the Opposition was given mike whenever he got up. “That is the respect we show to the Leader of Opposition,” he said.

The issue did not end here and spilled over into the lobbies. While the opposition party leaders alleged that the government makes all kinds of remarks against the opposition members and the minute they start criticising the government, the bell is rung and they are asked to conclude or else the mike is being withdrawn.

Even when the ministers make allegations against the opposition members particularly over the previous Congress government, they are not being allowed to clarify the situation, the LOP Jana Reddy said. Minister for Animal Husbandry T Srinivas Yadav said neither N Kiran Kumar Reddy nor N Manohar had given much chance to the Opposition to speak.
