Hyderabad: The award-winning Sirpur Paper Mills has fallen on bad days after the Poddars took over the management from Birlas. The government is, however, making all possible efforts to revive the paper mills in Mancherial district, asserted Minister for Industries K T Rama Rao on Saturday.

Replying to a question by J Geetha Reddy in the Assembly, KTR said the mill was shut down three months after the TRS came to power. He said the unit was closed down on September 28, 2014. The talks were in advanced stage of discussion. The Minister said considering the plight of employees, all efforts were being made to revive the unit.

The State government had even offered to allocate 7,000 hectares of forest land to meet the much-needed raw material, wood pulp, but it appeared that the management was not willing to reopen the mill.

“During the talks the government had with the management, it appeared that management was not serious. In fact, it tried to resort to arm-twisting methods and sought more perks and subsidies,” said KTR.

The Minister said the government was holding talks with companies like ITC to revive the unit which is spreading over 590 acres. Machinery in the paper industry needed to be updated regularly.

The management had obtained loans from banks but did not utilise the funds efficiently. The government even conducted auction to recover over Rs 422 crore loan arrears in February this year, but not many bidders had turned up, KTR added.

KTR said the Ramagundam Fertilisers and Chemicals Limited Company was revived with State government taking 11 per cent stake. Likewise, efforts were being made to revive the Cement Corporation of India unit at Adilabad. The State government, he said, had approached the Central government and expressed its willingness to make investment in the unit, said Rao.

Regarding Nizam Sugar Factory’s revival, KTR reiterated that if farmers were prepared to form a cooperative society, then the government would definitely revive it by clearing all the arrears. Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, he said, had even promised to make Congress member T Jeevan Reddy chairman of the society if he can help the government by motivating the farmers to form into a cooperative society.
