Telangana SHRC calls for report over Collector's remarks

Hyderabad: The Telangana Human Rights Commission today sought a report from chief secretary and DGP after a complaint was filed against Bhupalpally collector A Murali for his alleged remarks on Brahmin culture. Murali courted controversy after his remarks criticising renunciation of beef or pork for religious reasons went viral on social media. Members of some Brahmin organisations filed an application before the Commission and complained that the Collector made objectionable remarks about the community and their culture which hurt their sentiments.

The complaint further said that the Collector "provoked" people to kill wild boars and eat them. Based on the complaint a report has been called for from the chief secretary, Director General of Police and Chief Conservator of Forests. The matter has been posted for April 13. The official had during a programme to mark the World TB Day at Eturunagaram last week said that "Brahminical" culture had affected the eating habits of scheduled castes and scheduled tribes, leading to protein deficiency. Now due to some Brahminical forces we are practising ‘Malas' (a religious vow) and stopped eating beef and pork. That is affecting our immune system and leading to diseases such as tuberculosis," the Collector had said. The Collector had later apologised for using the word "Brahminical". Telangana chief secretary S P Singh had also earlier sought explanation from the Collector for his remarks. Earlier, Brahmin organisations had also met the Director General of Police Anurag Sharma, and demanded action against the Collector for his remarks.
