Mahbubnagar: It looks, the district of Mahbubnagar is sure to face acute drinking water problems, as the State government is yet to release funds meant to overcome the drinking water during this summer.

Every year, usually the State government releases some funds in advance to repair pipelines, mend bore wells and to arrange water tankers to the rural villages to meet the growing drinking water demand of the people in summer, however, this year even though the Rural water supply (RWS) authorities of all the 4 districts of erstwhile Mahbubnagar have sent their detailed proposals for funds to the State government, till date there is no response and not a single rupee has been allocated to the district to meet the summer emergencies.

“We have prepared alternative plan to overcome the summer drinking water problems and also sent a detailed proposal to the government way back in February but there is no response. To remind the government we have also sent another proposal during the 1st week of March for the release of Rs. 63.43 crores to meet the drinking water needs of the entire united Mahbubnagar district, however, till today we have not received any funds and all the pending works are left incomplete due to lack of funds,” informed a Senior official from RWS Mahbubnagar.

Currently, in the entire erstwhile Mahbubnagar there are 2901 villages which are facing acute water problems, however, the district administrations are able to supply drinking water through water tankers to only 243 villages, which is less than 10 per cent of overall demand.

Though the government is claiming tall on ‘Mission Bhagiratha’ to provide drinking water to every house hold, the current situation in the villages is slowing slipping from bad to worst. With no adequate rains since past 3 years and this time the hot summer advancing even before February, the ground water table had gone steep and there is no sign of water seen even after digging bore wells as deep as 500-600 feet.

As an alternate plan to meet the summer emergencies, usually the State government grants additional funds, however this time even though the officials have sent proposals to the government there is no sign of approval.
