Nagarkurnool: The five-day Saleswaram festival is underway in jungles of Nagarkurnool district and will last till April 14.

It reminds us of the dangerous Amaranath Yatra in Kashmir given the fact that the devotees have to undertake arduous journey through thick jungles.

The devotees have to trek five kilometers to reach Saleswaram. Lakhs of Devotees, who include those from Maharashtra and Karnataka, will visit the place, where Shiva Linga is nestled amidst pristine beauty of nature and forests.

The Dandakaranya region in Nallamala forest area reverberates with the hymn “Om Namah Sivayah” all the five days.

Devotees reach the place taking a lot of risk travelling through hills and forests while the beauty of pleasant nature with waterfalls descending majestically down welcomes the devotees.

Large number of devotees will have darshan of the deity on full moon day in the auspicious Telugu month of Chaitra. To reach the place, one has to travel 15 kilometers deep into jungles from Paharabad viewpoint on the Hyderabad-Srisailam road.

From there, one has to trek a five-kilometer-long route taking a lot of risks. People should keep themselves alert while walking along the route since a minor slip is sufficient for them to find themselves tripping into the valley.

Young and old will visit the place on the full moon day in the Telugu month with the belief that it will fulfill their wishes.

The government did not pay attention to develop the Saleswaram because of the Maoist menace. Since the menace was on the wane, people have been appealing to the government to allow them to have darshan of the deity for at least 20 days in a year.

The forest department has been making only nominal arrangements and is collecting toll tax from vehicles.

Though lakhs of devotees throng the place every year, there will be no sign of police and revenue officials. But it has become customary for the Chenchu associations and voluntary organisations to make food and arrange other amenities for devotees.
