Hyderabad: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had strongly criticised the move of the government to provide 12 per cent reservations to Muslims of the State by calling it anti-constitutional and demanded that the government withdraw it.
State party president K Laxman on Wednesday said that the party would fight against the 12 per cent reservations both inside and outside the Assembly.

Laxman said that Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar made sure that there are no religion based reservations in the constitution but the TRS government is bringing the reservations against the constitutional spirit. He said that there are no castes in Muslims and the government is trying to give 12 per cent reservations to entire Muslim community. He said that BJP would support the reservations if they are given on the basis of economic situation but not on the base of religion.

“If the Muslim community is to be developed, government should bring appropriate schemes and ensure that they are effectively implemented. Bringing reservations based on religion, which is not in the Constitution is nothing but deceiving the people,” said Laxman. He said that the TRS would have to face the fate of Congress and Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh in the coming elections.

Party floor leader in the Assembly G Kishan Reddy said that the 12 per cent reservations for Muslims announced by the TRS government reflect the vote bank politics of the ruling party. He alleged that the TRS had not taken into consideration the earlier judgment of High Court against the reservations, which is also against the constitution and thoughts of Baba Saheb Ambedkar. He said that though many courts had clearly said reservations based on religion cannot be given, the TRS had announced the reservations, which is nothing but infringement in rights of the BCs.

Giving reservations to Muslims in the name of BCs would be injustice to the backward classes, he alleged. Kishan Reddy alleged that the TRS government was misusing the power. He said that the government was exploiting the rights of the BC Commission by asking them to consider Muslims as BCs. The 4 per cent Muslim reservations, which are being implemented in the State, are continuing after Supreme Court stayed the High Court judgment. He said that the government decision is taken at a time when the issue is going to come before the constitutional bench of the Supreme Court, which is nothing but insulting the judiciary.
