Hyderabad: Ch Vidyasagar Rao, Governor of Maharashtra, on Thursday called up on the alumni of Osmania University to contribute towards the development of the university as ‘Guru Dakshina.’Speaking as the Chief Guest at the Alumni meet of Osmania University, he said the alumni of Mumbai University, which had 35,000 strong membership including industrialists like Ambanis, had pooled Rs 300 crore for the development of the University.

He called upon the Osmania University alumni to emulate the Mumbai University’s former students. “You might have given Guru Dakshina but now there is a need for you to give ‘Guru Dakshina’. Take lead in this and come to Mumbai, I have a blueprint prepared and will explain it to you,” Vidyasagar Rao told the alumni.Stating that 50 per cent of the faculty posts are vacant in the University, Rao pointed out that the government was not thinking in this way.

He urged the alumni to give suggestions to the government on developing the University.Vidyasagar Rao recalled his days with Osmania and said that he only remembers the beatings he faced in the University. “I was here 50 years ago when I joined the three year LLB course but it took five years to complete the course due to several agitations. I mostly remember the attacks on myself,” said Vidyasagar Rao. He said the name Osmania itself was a brand for many years and it was like a visa for many countries.

Many students of this University like S B Chavan, Shivraj Patil and others have become Chief Ministers, Governors and Speakers. He also said the University witnessed many agitations including the freedom struggle and struggle for separate Telangana. Even after many agitations in Osmania, the University still finds place in top 100 Universities in the World, he added. He said there may have been ideological differences but there was certainly no intolerance in the country.

Asking youth not to fear the visa restrictions imposed by the USA, Vidyasagar Rao said, “Do not fear as we are the legal heir of the wisdom of the world. We would be the youngest nation in the world by 2020 with India boosting an average age of 29 years.”Union Labour and Employment Minister Bandaru Dattatreya advocated a corpus fund in the form of contributions from the Alumni members. The Minister said he would assist the University in getting funds from the Centre.

The Minister assured to give Rs 1 crore, from his Constituency Development Fund, for the renovations of Girls hostels in the campus. He said a modern employment exchange would be set up in the University next month and also added that a new skill development centre would also be set up in the campus. Former Union Minister S Jaipal Reddy and others also spoke on the occasion.
