Siddipet: Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao said that despite providing uninterrupted power supply in villages and nine-hour power supply for agriculture, complete productivity could not be achieved due to non availability of water during the fag end of the cropping season.

The Minister was speaking at the inaugural ceremony of Nabard - Godrej watershed projects in Mandhapur village of Jagdevpur mandal in Siddipet district on Monday. He asked the people to take up water and soil conservation in a big way. Such projects would be taken up in Telangana under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) by companies like Godrej. National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) would support the projects, the Minister said.

G Ramesh Kumar, AGM, Nabard, indicated that the rural growth scenario in the state is fast-changing towards green Telangana. He said that in the next few years various watershed activities in the region would ensure percolation of rain water into the ground, He observes that climate change due to increasing global temperatures brings an adverse impact. Watershed projects would help to improve groundwater levels, he said.

K Nimmaiah, Executive Director, People’s Action for Creative Education (PEACE), an implementing partner of the Mandhapur-Kondapur and Gollapalli-Munigadapa watershed projects, indicated that conservation of fertile top soil is important for agricultural productivity and implementation of watershed projects would ensure soil and moisture conservation,K Prabhakar Reddy, Member of Parliament, Medak, stressed on the need for extensive tree plantation, which would prevent reduction of forests.

As part of integrated development of rural areas, Nabard is partnering with Godrej in the implementation of Mandhapur-Kondapur and Gollapally-Munigadapa watershed projects by spending Rs 4 Crore. G Satyanadh from Godrej and PN Satya Prasad, GM, Nabard, Joint Collector Hanumantha Rao and others participated in the inauguralprogramme.
