Hyderabad: The bid for redeveloping the city’s famed Secunderabad Railway Station with separate arrivals and departures and other most modern amenities will be opened on 29.

The initial bidding process proved to be a damp squib as prospective bidders were unsure if they would be able to take up the project for several reasons that include the magnitude of the project and due to the fact that this is the first time that a railway station is being redeveloped on a PPP model in India.

Speaking to the media on Friday, the South Central Railway General Manager Vinod Kumar Yadav said, “This is a fairly new concept and private players were unsure. It took almost a month to sink in. No single company can do it.

They will have to form a consortium. In the initial bid, contenders were not confident.” There are five companies in the fray including GMR. The other four are Puravankara Projects Ltd, Sthopes, CBRE South Asia and IL&FS, a Mumbai-based bidder.

According to estimates, it would require Rs 282 crore to redevelop the station with separate arrivals and departures. Vinod Kumar said the second and third floors of the station could be used for commercial exploitation by contractors.

The SCR does not intend to invest money. Extra land in and around the station would also be given for commercial exploitation. About 5.62 acres of space in and around the station would be given to private parties to invest in commercial real estate, he said.
