Hyderabad: The Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) decided to give the residents of the Cantonment area another chance to regularise their illegal water connections. The decision was made during a board meeting on Tuesday.

The last time such an offer was extended was in 2015, but there are still several connections that need to be regularised. According to rough estimates, the number may be in thousands and apparently about 2,000 connections were issued red notices and disconnected last year.

As per the offer in 2015, a person who had an illegal connection had to pay a penalty of Rs 8, 500 and get it regularised. The SCB officials insist that they pay the arrears along with penalty, but few elected members wanted the board to regularise the connection with just a penalty.

There are close to 50,000 connections in the cantonment. Many illegal connections exist in Marredpally, Sanjeevanagar and Valmikinagar. In many cases, the bills with arrears are between Rs 20,000 to 30,000. An official of the water wing said the people with illegal connections need to pay the monthly bill right from 2015 along with the penalty.

Meanwhile, residents complain that they have not received bills for years and it is difficult to pay huge amount all of a sudden. Madhavi, a resident of Marredpally said, “The civic amenities in Secunderabad Cantonment in comparison to GHMC are below average. We have no problem in paying bills but where are the civic amenities,” she questions.
