Hyderabad: Telagnana government is planning to geo-tag about 330 historical and heritage sites in the State in a bid to protect and promote the culture, heritage and tourism. According to sources, the move has come against the backdrop of the Archeological Survey of India (ASI) trying to map all the heritage sites in the country using the Bhuvana, ISRO’s geo-portal.
Speaking to The Hans India, a senior official from ASI said, as of now, only few sites of historical importance like Golconda Fort, Charminar, the famous 1000-pillar Ramappa temple and fort in Warangal district and two pre-historic sites in the State have been taken up.
But, the State government wanted to geo-tag all the historical and heritage sites in Telangana. The main objective for this move is to help protect the sites by curbing the encroachments.Secondly, the geo-tagged data would help in developing Geographical Information System (GIS) data. In turn, it would provide accurate information for people across the globe to search historical and heritage sites, monuments, temples etc of their interest located in the State.
Currently, the State has nearly 107 sites dating back to 10th century BC, 16 sites belonging to pre-Kakatiya period and about 100 sites dating between 8th to 16th century A.D. That apart, there are two naturally protected sites at Sirpur Kagaznagar and Asifabad dating back to 30th century B.C.
These sites include forts, mosques, and tombs, temples belonging to Jain and Hindu religion and colonial monuments. At present, there is no comprehensive data to give accurate information, photographs, route maps, transportation, and details of facilities for stay etc., for tourists to plan their visits. Process of developing accurate information in textual and visual formats would be taken up after getting the State government’s nod.
Following the recent enactment of the Telangana Heritage (Protection, Conservation, Preservation and Maintenance) Bill, 2017, it is proposed to review the list of sites of historical importance by a committee headed by the State Chief Secretary. Though the department has data related to different sites, steps would be taken to come up with final data base once the committee finalises the list of sites under the new law, the official said.
