Hyderabad: Somajiguda library in city is converted into a community hall due to the acts by local corporator and MLA. Besides this, several libraries have been encroached and they do not have own buildings.
Citizens alleged that local MLA and corporators had encroached the library building and converted it into a community hall. The residents complained that the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation and City Library authorities have been turning a blind eye to the issue even after lodging several complaints.
The 50-year old Ameerpet Library has been asked to vacate by the building owners as Hyderabad City Grandhalaya Samstha failed to pay the building rent. The property owner even demanded rent enhancement. Librarian at Ameerpet M Srinivas said,
There are no other staff members here to look after the library except me and a part-time sweeper to clean the place. There is no water facility; only one fan is working; no furniture, and only 8 chairs are available. Every day, approximately 70 to 80 people come here.”
Venkatesh librarian at Somajiguda said, “The MLA has illegally occupied the building and changed the name of the building as a community hall. In this small building we don’t have space for computer. Daily 80 to 90 people come and there are no fans here.”
Branch library (women’s) at Erramanzil Colony is in dilapidated condition. The building has several leakages and has no proper electric wiring. The toilets are in worst condition and there is no proper furniture at the library.
To make the matter worse, Somajiguda and Erramanzil libraries have been maintained by one librarian. He said that the Erramanzil library desperately requires a women librarian.
Responding to a query, Hyderabad district joint collector M Prashanthi said, “I’m unaware of this issue, as soon as I got to know I spoke with the concerned people. Action will be taken as soon as possible.”
