Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister K T Rama Rao asked the Health Department to hand over the 145 Urban Primary Health Centres (UPHCs) in Hyderabad to Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) for providing better health services to the urban poor.
Hyderabad: Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister K T Rama Rao asked the Health Department to hand over the 145 Urban Primary Health Centres (UPHCs) in Hyderabad to Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) for providing better health services to the urban poor.
KTR was speaking at a workshop on ‘Effective Implementation of National Urban Health Mission (NUHM) in Telangana State’ here on Thursday. He has said that presently, medical facilities are being provided by the municipal corporations in eight metro cities in the country. “There are 145 UPHCs in Hyderabad, if the Health Minister C Laxma Reddy can handover these UPHCs to GHMC, we will be happy to run them. We will run them more effectively than the ‘Mohalla clinics’ functioning in New Delhi,” said KTR.
The MAUD Minister alleged that the earlier governments had neglected the Medical and Health sector in government and encouraged corporate hospitals. He said that 42 per cent of the population in Telangana lives in urban areas, which is highest in the country.
The rural people migrate to urban areas just to have a better livelihood. He stressed on the need to have coordinated and better convergence between the Health Department and Urban Local Bodies. Because of the negligence of the earlier governments, there was not even one ICU in the district hospitals. After the Telangana State was formed, there has been improvement in the medical facilities, he said.
KTR has stated that 80 per cent of the problems among the urban poor was due to lack of proper drinking water. Chief Minister KCR has been striving to provide drinking water to every household through Mission Bhagiratha. The project would be completed within 18 to19 months. He asked the officials to use the technology to the optimum level for providing better services.
Union Joint Secretary of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare K Rajeshwar Rao said the medical and health expenditure had gone out of hand for the urban poor. For providing comprehensive, better health facilities in towns for the poor and weaker sections, the government of India had started NUHM.
Health Secretary Rajeshwar Tiwari said that since the urban population is highly vulnerable to diseases, the Centre had started NUHM and selected 48 towns in the country to develop medical facilities.
KTR, on the occasion, launched ‘Swachh Dooth’ mobile application especially for the housewives who segregate the wet and dry waste into the different bins given by the corporation. This would give them a chance to win Rs 1 lakh from GHMC. The Minister also launched NUHM mobile App, which contains all the details of public health centers.
