Hyderabad: The state government, which conducted a survey of farmers and their land holdings before it introduces the Rs 4000 per acre incentive scheme, found out that ministers, MPs, MLAs and bureaucrats were among those who own more than 25 acres of fertile land.

In view of this, the government is of the opinion that it should ask all such people to voluntarily opt out of the scheme to be introduced from next year, according to top sources in the government.

It may be mentioned here that Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, while announcing the scheme, said the incentives would be given to all the farmers irrespective of their land holdings.

Hence, instead of making any amendments to the scheme at this stage, it is contemplating to ask these sections to voluntarily give up the scheme.

Sources said the government is planning to include ‘give up subsidy’ clause in the application which is to be submitted by the farmers to the department to avail the incentive. The rich farmers can opt the ‘give up subsidy’ option when they submit the applications.

The survey conducted by the Agriculture department in coordination with the Revenue department has found out that 60 per cent of the farmers hold less than 2.5 acres of land, 25 per cent own 2.5-5 acres, 10 per cent possess 5-10 acres and 3 per cent own land between 10 and 25 and 2 per cent have more than 25 acres of land in their possession.

The total extent of agriculture land in Telangana is 1,24,50,000 acres out of which 51.30 lakh acres covered with the irrigation facility and the remaining is rain-fed dryland.

Officials say that the main aim of the launching the financial incentive scheme is essentially to relieve the poor farmers from debt burden during the Kharif and Rabi seasons. They said the basic objective of the scheme is to protect the distressed small and marginal farmers from debt by providing Rs 4,000 incentive every farming season.

State Secretary to Agriculture C Parthasaradhi said the rich farmers should come forward and give up the subsidy voluntarily which would help the government in reducing financial burden and also reach the benefits to all the deserved poor farmers.
