Secunderabad: It took just a couple of hours for the Military Engineering Service (MES) to carpet the stretch on Gough Road that had been the bane of the people of Secunderabad Cantonment.

In a knee-jerk reaction, the Local Military Authority swung into action on Sunday morning even as a group of people from the Federation of North Eastern Colonies assembled at 8.30 am in the morning to fill the potholes. Contractors entrusted with the task by the MES got down to work. The National Security Guard (NSG) unit shut gates until the roads were carpeted.

“We were delighted that the road was carpeted. This goes to show the power of people,” said a beaming C S Chandrashekar, Secretary, Federation of North- Eastern Colonies. This was the second week in succession that men, women and children congregated at the potholes ridden road to clean it up.

It may be recalled that The Hans India had reported on the bad condition of the roads titled ‘Drive on this road nightmarish’ (July 14). Consequently, the Resident Welfare Associations started ‘shramdaan’ last Sunday and followed it up on July 30 and to their pleasant surprise, saw that action was taken.

The RWAs demanded that the road be widened to 30 metres as it connects three municipalities, namely Kapra, Alwal and Malkajgiri, with lakhs of people using the road everyday.
