Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has been keeping the lives of about 500 workers at high risk. The workers, who have been deployed by the civic body to tree branch pruning on the Ganesh immersion procession routes, have been working without safety gear. The corporation, instead of providing the latter helmet and other safety measures, has been asking the workers to climb water tankers to cut the trees.

Due to the careless attitude of the GHMC officials, Sammaiah, a 56-year- old worker, working in urban biodiversity wing, lost his life after slipping from a water tanker near Jamia Osmania Road, Secunderabad while clearing trees in the Ganesh procession routes.

When asked about not providing safety gear to workers, a senior GHMC official told The Hans India that workers, since four years, have been performing their duties in the similar manner. Referring the death of the workers, he said it was unfortunate incident and the GHMC will now provide them safety gear.

He said that the GHMC will provide employment to one of the members from the deceased family and an ex-gratia of Rs 7 lakh which includes Rs 2 lakh from Mayor funds.

TRSKV President U Gopal alleged that the due to negligence of GHMC officials several workers have lost their lives. He said even the issue was brought to the notice of higher officials, but they have turned a blind eye. He demanded the civic body to provide the safety gear to workers with immediate effect and provide ex-gratia of Rs 25 lakh to the deceased family including employment to one member.
