Hyderabad: The railway contractors called off their ‘tool down’ strike after getting an assurance from the Railway Board Chairman. With the ending of the agitation, infrastructure works in South Central Railway (SCR) were resumed. Currently, works worth Rs 4,000 crore are at various stages of progress with an involvement of 400 contractors.

The contractors were up in arms demanding that the Railways bear the GST burden on the works taken up by them. The members of Indian Railway Infrastructure Providers Association (IRIPA) were on strike since August 20. The demands include reimbursement of the additional burden due to GST for the works tendered before July 1. They also demand the Centre to bear the GST for the tenders issued after July 1.

D Srinivas, a contractor and member of IRIPA said, “Based on the assurance given by the Railway Board chairman who has written to the finance secretary in this regard, the strike has been called off.” It is learnt that the Railway Board Chairman has written for a onetime settlement or roll back of GST for ongoing projects.
