Once India was full of tamarind trees; but currently their number is far from satisfactory and dwindling by the day. India is importing tamarind from Malaysia which is not as good as the Indian tamarind, said Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi here on Thursday.

She was addressing the course participants and their wives of the higher Defence Management course at the College of Defence Management. Army wives can play an important role in the overall development of the Cantonments if they could embark on an ‘Imli Mission’ that is of planting tamarind trees it would transform the Cantonments and also could become a revenue generating project.

Stop shooting dogs, sterilise them
Guns are supposed to be used for the enemy and not against dogs, said the Minister. She suggested that the Army take up sterilisation programmes in the Cantonments and make sure that the dogs are left back at the same place from where they were picked up. Stressing on the importance of maintaining equilibrium, Maneka Gandhi said, “Dogs balance the environment and act as watchdogs.” Giving an example of Surat, she said when all the dogs were killed; rats in lakhs surfaced and resulted in plague.

Women conductors and drivers for school buses
In what can be termed as a major decision, Maneka Gandhi hinted that in the new Women’s policy, the government is seriously planning of making it mandatory to have women conductors and drivers for all school buses. In the last few years, there have been several instances of violence against school children and this decision could be a major decision in favour of children.
