Hyderabad: Four members of the notorious ‘Kanjar Gang’ of Madhya Pradesh, who had waylaid a container truck and looted cigarette cartons worth Rs 4 crore near Pedda Amberpet on the outskirts of the city last month, were arrested by the Rachakonda police.

It is said that this is the first time that members of the Kanjar Gang had been caught by the police. The gang earlier struck terror among the MP police by making many attempts to kill police personnel. The gang was operating in various parts of the country, mainly targeting trucks and other heavy vehicles transporting cigarettes. The gang’s set target is believed to Rs 20 crore per year.

Rachakonda Commissioner of Police Mahesh Bhagwat on Friday produced the four arrested members of the Kanjar Gang before the media and detailed how the police succeeded in nabbing the accused persons. The arrested persons were Rajaram, Sunil Chavda, Raja Babu alias Satish and Hakam Singh, all residents of Dewas in Madhya Pradesh.

Narrating the details of the sensational highway dacoity that took place on August 19 near the Outer Ring Road at Pedda Amberpet under Hayathnagar police station limits, the Commissioner said the container truck with the 647 cartons of cigarettes had left the ITC in Musheerabad in the city for Renigunta.

About 30 members of the Kanjar Gang, who came in two Innova cars and lorries, waylaid the container truck and dragged the driver Akhilesh Yadav out of the vehicle, threatened and tied him with ropes. The dacoits then took the driver to an isolated place and unloaded the cigarette cartons into the lorries they had brought along with them and fled the spot.

The special teams collected CCTV footages from all tollgates from Deglorr ( Maharashtra) to Ananthapur and ORR. Besides this, they also visited Maharashtra and MP and examined old offenders. During the course of the investigations, the officers, based on a minor clue about the suspicious movements of an Innova car with MP registration number, identified the culprits as members of the notorious Kanjar Gang, which was involved in waylaying and looting container trucks transporting cigarettes and committing thefts in malls in different parts of the country.

Based on credible information, the investigating teams proceeded to Indore, Dewas and Bhopal of Madhya Pradesh to track down the gang. They received a tip off and proceeded to a bus station at Dewas and arrested the four culprits. All the four arrested were stated to have confessed to the dacoity.

The police also seized four vehicles used in the dacoity from parking yards at Indore where they usually park them after committing the offence.

After producing all the four accused persons before the local jurisdictional magistrate, they were brought to Hyderabad on transit remand for further investigations.
