Hyderabad: With good inflows into Srisailam reservoir, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh governments are set to lock horns over the utilisation of water from river Krishna. While Andhra Pradesh already requested for the release of 20 TMC of water for irrigation needs, Telangana government has decided to forward a proposal demanding for the release of water for late Kharif season and also the next Rabi before KRMB (Krishna River Management Board).

Apart from the release of 17 TMC of water for drinking purpose for Greater Hyderabad and fluoride-hit Nalgonda district, Telangana is estimating the requirement of another 10 TMC of water to meet irrigation needs.

The KRMB is likely to hold meeting in two or three days to address the two States’ demand to the release of water. Telangana Irrigation officials said that water levels in Srisailam reservoir reached at 854 feet as against 885 feet FRL ( Full Reservoir Level).

Inflows in the reservoir would continue for another week from the upper riparian State of Karnataka. It is expected that the water levels would go up to 875 feet this monsoon season. Considering heavy inflows, Telangana government already pleaded with the Board for the release of 17 TMC for drinking purpose.

The government wanted to provide irrigation facility across Nagarjuna Sagar Left Bank Canal and help the farmers to take up late kharif crops. As the Rabi season is set to begin from November, the TS government is getting ready to supply water in the next season also by availing its share in Krishna.

It is estimated that irrigation facility would be provided to 1 lakh acres with the availability of water. While 299 TMC of water was earmarked for Telangana, 512 TMC was earmarked for Andhra Pradesh .

Officials said that Andhra Pradesh requested 20 TMC of water and release to Nagarjuna Sagar Right Bank Canal, Handri Neeva and Pothireddypadu lift irrigation project to meet the immediate water needs. The Board was already monitoring the release of water from Srisailam to left and rigth bank canals by installing telemetry system.
