Hyderabad: The hydro power has come to the rescue of the power distribution companies of the State which have been reeling under pressure from increasing demand for power in the State for the past two months.

The hydro power projects have contributed about 20 MU to the power supply on Wednesday. With good inflows into the reservoirs of irrigation projects, the power utilities hope to generate more power in the next few days. The TS Genco was able to produce about 800 MW of power from the Jurala and Srisailam reservoirs which received significant inflows in the past few days.

The Discoms heaved a sigh of relief with the generation of hydro power. The Discoms have been purchasing about 1,500 MW of power per day from the exchanges spending crores of rupees for the past two months. With the commencement of hydel generation, the power utilities have scaled down the purchase of power from the exchanges on Wednesday and Thursday.

Ever since the round-the-clock power supply to the agriculture sector in three districts was launched, the demand has gone up to 9,500 MW. But the supply from the State owned companies remained at 4,000 MW. The Discoms procured power from the Central Generation Units, renewable power production units and from the exchanges to meet the demand.

The hydro power generation units, which have a capacity of about 2,700 MW, have been idle for the past one year. The hydro power generation is important to the State power distribution companies as it comes at a cheaper rate.

While the cost of purchase of hydro power is Rs 1.20 per unit, the cost of power produced from the thermal stations and renewable power sources ranges between Rs 3.50 per unit to Rs 5 per unit.

The thermal stations of the Genco were being continuously operated to meet the demand for power in the State. The average energy consumption has gone up to 190 MUs per day from June which was 140 MU per day during the August and September period in the last year. The power available from the hydro stations has reached to 610 MUs on Wednesday which was just 14 MUs in the last month.

Flood in Krishna River has filled Jurala and Srisailam projects to certain levels and made generation of hydro power on large scale possible. However, the present available power through hydro project is 300 MUs less than the one existed in last year during the same period.

As of now, Jurala could provide up to 8 MUs, Srisailam about 447 MUs, Singur about 18 MUs and Pochmpadu about 33 MUs. Officials of Genco are hopeful that the water levels in the reservoir would rise in October giving more scope for hydro power generation.
