Hyderabad: Congress MLC and Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council Md Ali Shabbir on Tuesday demanded that Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao and his son and MA&UD Minister K T Rama Rao should stop making ‘hollow’ statements on NRI welfare and should introduce NRI policy Bill in the ensuing Assembly session.

Addressing reporters at the Assembly Media Point, Shabbir questioned Chandrashekar Rao about his promises on comprehensive NRI policy which did not materialise even after three years and six months have passed since the government was formed.

He said he was receiving phone calls from NRIs belonging to Nizamabad, Karimnagar and Siddipet to save them and address their problems to bring them back. The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) government should arrange a study tour of all party MLAs and MLCs along with MEA officials under the chairmanship of a State Minister to meet and interact with employees, labourers and officials to address the NRI problems as was done by the Congress government earlier, he added.

Shabbir also came down heavily upon Rama Rao for his failures and said he was a Minister for receiving awards only. Shabbir said 30,000 labourers belonging to Karimnagar, Nizamabad, Medak and Adilabad working in Gulf Countries had become jobless after the Saudi Arabia’s Bin Laden Construction Company was shut down rendering 77,000 workers jobless.

He also asked the State government to emulate Andhra Pradesh which created a Rs 40 crore corpus fund for welfare of NRIs, with helplines, insurance and medicare. Demanding that the TRS government should bring out a comprehensive NRI policy and take steps to reinstate the ration cards cancelled and set up an NRI cell in each district.

“There should be a social security scheme for the NRIs working in the Gulf and a rehabilitation package to the families of Gulf victims with Rs 20 lakh financial assistance, skill trainings by NAC instead of Jagruthi (Kavitha) owned organisation, an NRI office outside the Secretariat that is accessible to all as well,” he demanded.

During the Congress regime, they brought 25,000 people and arranged free tickets to 1,256 candidates, he said. He said even the present development of the twin cities such as Metro Rail, Krishna water, ORR and PVNR Expressway were all brainchild of the previous Congress government.
