Hyderabad: The State government has increased licence fee for each microbrewery from the present Rs 3 lakh to Rs 5 lakh. This decision was taken in the new Bar, Microbreweries and Toddy Policy announced by the State government on Friday.

At present, 10 microbreweries have been opened in the city. The exclusive breweries are serving draught beer to guzzlers. Officials said beer sale was increasing substantially since the number of visitors to the breweries doubled in the last six months. The government decided to cash in on the increasing demand for breweries by escalating the license fee this year.

Without any major changes to the existing policy, the government announced the new Bar Policy 2017-18 under which the existing bar managements would have to renew their licenses for another one year. The total number of bars will remain the same. Out of 972 bars, 645 are located in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits.

Principal Secretary to Excise Department Somesh Kumar said the bars located on the national and state highways would be shifted beyond 500 meters. No signages and advertisements of the availability of liquor would be permitted both on national and state highways. The official said toddy sale licenses would be valid for five years.
