Hyderabad: The Supreme Court on Wednesday cleared long-pending Kokapet land case in favour of Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA). Private persons during 2002 filed a case in the apex court claiming 1,635 acres land in Kokapet village of Rangareddy district. After gruelling 15 years, the HMDA owned right over the 623 acres of land with the Supreme Court’s verdict. The HMDA claimed that the land on which it won right is worth Rs 10,000 crore.

HMDA commissioner T Chiranjeevulu said that land in question was handed over to the government in 2002 after a survey was carried on jagir lands. One KSB Ali along with 203 legal heirs filed a case in Andhra Pradesh High Court on April 15, 2002 claiming ownership of land. Challenging the Ali’s claim, the state government gave representation in the court on May 6, 2004. The single judge had set aside the government memo dated May 21, 2005, that declared that the land as government property.

HMDA commissioner further said in 2006 HMDA approached the High Court after KSB Ali once again filed a case claiming that the memo issued was without his knowledge. The HMDA filed a counter petition in the High Court. HC referred the case to the division bench which in 2011 declared that the 623 acres of prime land in Kokapet belongs to the government. Challenging the HC's verdict in 2012, KSB Ali filed a petition in the Supreme Court. The apex court on Wednesday ruled in favour of HMDA, said the elated Chiranjeevulu.

"The 623 acres of land which belongs to HMDA is worth Rs 10,000 cr. Earlier out of 623 acres, 166 acre was auctioned to 17 IT companies at the cost of Rs 1,755 cr, but only Rs 678 cr was collected and agreed that the remaining Rs 1,068 cr would be paid in instalments as the case was pending in the court. Another 51 acres was sold to private parties," said the HMDA commissioner.
