Hyderabad: Though the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) has installed speed guns on Outer Ring Road (ORR), the HMDA officials are contemplating to install ‘speed cameras ‘or ‘speed claiming device’ in collaboration with the traffic police department. Recently, the HMDA has written letter to police department for the approval and installation of these ‘speed cameras’.

The ‘speed camera’ is a camera which can be installed beside or over the road and can help to detect traffic regulation violations including overspeeding vehicles in day and night time also. This system can be linked to an automated ticketing system.

The ‘speed cameras’ can capture number plates of two to three vehicles simultaneously, works for all weather conditions, does not require human intervention and precise speed detection.

Whereas, the eight laser speed guns which are installed on ORR captures number plates of only one vehicle at a time, speed guns are affected in visibility in all weather conditions, cannot work during the night time. They are meant to be operated manually and speed detection is not accurate in speed guns. A senior HMDA official said that a private company has come forward to install speed cameras on ORR, has conducted survey on ORR and P V Narasimha Rao Expressway as a pilot project.

He said that HMDA has written a letter to police department for its approval as it should be taken up in coordination with traffic police.

Explaining about the benefits of the project, official said that these speed cameras would lead people to lessen overspeeding and can bring down the road accidents. He said that these cameras are of high accuracy, can work both during day and night and the consumption of power is less.
