Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is battling cash crunch woes in order to complete the Double Bedroom Housing (2BHK) project for urban poor in the city. The civic body officials claimed that the State government has not been releasing sufficient funds for the 2BHK housing project in stipulated time.
According to GHMC official, the government released Rs 77 crore in the month of August, which the civic body released towards the private agencies for the ongoing works. The civic officials in order to complete the works within the deadline set by the government, had initiated works for 45,000 2BHK houses, but due to the delay of funds from the government the work progress of 90 per cent houses was affected.
A senior GHMC official told The Hans India that the civic body had completed the tender process for 95,000 2BHK houses and grounded works for 45,000 double bedroom houses. He said with the release of Rs 77 crore, the GHMC laid foundation stones for 20,000 houses and the work is running at brisk pace. However, the official said in order to lay the foundation for remaining 75,000 houses and continue with the ongoing works, the civic body sought Rs 230 crore from the government, but it sanctioned mere Rs 25 crore.
The official said the current Rs 25 crore will not be sufficient to carry on the works for the ongoing project as the government earmarked Rs 7.9 crore for each dwelling unit. He said the civic body could complete the target set by the government only if it releases the required amount on time.
When asked about finalising tenders for another 5,000 2BHK houses, the official said corporation has invited tender for three times, but no one participated in the bidding process. He said the civic body will invite fresh tenders within a week if bidders fail to participate the issue would be taken to the government.
