Hyderabad: The Telangana State government has informed the High Court at Hyderabad on Wednesday that the National Green Tribunal seemed to have misunderstood its argument relating to environmental and forest clearances. It submitted that the contention made by it before the NGT that drinking water projects would not require environmental clearance was apparently misconstrued as contending that the entire project did not require environmental clearance.

With the NGT uploading the full judgment on Tuesday, Kaleshwaram project Chief Engineer had filed an additional affidavit. It was submitted that applications for environmental and forest clearances for the project had been made and they are under consideration of the Union government.

It was asserted that no works pertaining to irrigation channels had been undertaken and only those relating to drinking water project were being carried out. Works relating to irrigation would be undertaken only after getting necessary clearances. The objections related to jurisdiction of NGT to entertain the petition were also not considered, it was stated.

The division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Ramesh Ranganathan and Justice J Uma Devi during the hearing on Wednesday sought clarifications on certain doubts it had about the judgment of NGT. Only after that would it decide whether to take up the hearing or not.

The counsel for the petitioner in NGT, Vedula Venkataramana, sought time to argue the case as the Telangana State government had filed an additional affidavit on Wednesday. The bench adjourned the case to Thursday.
