New Delhi: IT and Industries Minister K T Rama Rao unveiled the Telangana government's food processing policy at the World Food India-2017 conclave here on Saturday. Explaining that the aim of the policy was to double farmers’ income in the next five years, KTR said his government would link the food processing industry with the agri sector as well as animal husbandry. Aqua culture and sheep-rearing programmes taken up in right earnest by Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao would be integrated with the food processing industry, he added.

The state government was sure that Rs 20,000-crore investments would flow into the state in the next five-year because of the effort and it would lead to 1.25 lakh direct jobs. Apart from livestock rearing, milk production too would be increased many times over to make Telangana a hub of the food processing industry in the country, he added.

Establishment of an agri-food value chain was paramount to it and the government would take steps to have it in place in no time, KTR said, adding that Mission Kakatiya would boost agri produce in the state and hence, food processing clusters and food parks would be established in great numbers. The government would also constitute an agri-tech fund to encourage start-ups in the area, he said. Innovation and policy strengthening would be core to the policy, he added.

Later, the state government entered into nine MoUs worth Rs 1,250 crore with groups like Bikanerwallah, Prayag Nutrimans Foods, Kanoria Group (Annapoorna Foods), Karachi Bakery, Blue Craft Agro, Sampri Group, Cream Line Dairy and Pushya Foods, etc. It is hoped that 3,800 persons would get direct jobs while 20,000 more also would be gainfully employed indirectly. Principal Secretary of the Industries Jayesh Ranjan told the media that due to the MoUs signed so far, 10,000 direct jobs would be created. In addition, 45,000 farmers would be benefited technically due to the agri-food processing linkages.
