Home Minister Nayini Narasimha Reddy on Tuesday addressed the issue of traffic jams in the city after a question was raised by MLC Poola Ravinder in the Legislative Council on massive traffic jams that are on the rise.

Responding to it, the Minister quoted a survey conducted by a cab aggregator in January 2017 and said that the average speed of the traffic movement in the city has gone up from 18 kmph to 27.1 kmph indicating the speed limit of the city people being 50 percent higher.

He said that the government is taking several steps to regulate traffic and that the police are focusing on traffic regulation adding that the focus was also on clearing encroachments on pavements.

He mentioned that the traffic congestion is being caused due to the addition of 850 new vehicles per day, ongoing Metro Rail works, inadequate carriageways and damaged roads.

Citing different measures, Nayini Narasimha Reddy said that the government is working on series of initiatives including construction of skyways over flyovers, junction improvement, free U-turn facility provided for the convenience of motorists at many junctions while departments concerned have taken up works expansion of carriageways, road repair.
