Hyderabad: After getting all important clearances, Telangana state government has now advanced the deadline for the completion of the prestigious Kaleshwaram project. Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has decided to dedicate the first major irrigation project, conceived by his government, to the nation on Telangana Formation Day on June 2 next year. Earlier, the government targeted the completion of the lift irrigation project by December 2018.
The Kaleshwaram project was taken up in 2015 by re-designing the Pranahitha– Chevella multi- purpose project. The inter- state project has been taken up with the cooperation of Maharashtra government aiming to create 18.25 lakh acres of new ayacut and stabilise another 18.82 lakh acres by utlising all the 950 tmc ft of water of allocated water from the Godavari river to Telangana.
The Centre has already accorded Stage 2 forest clearances, hydrological, inter- state and Stage 1 environmental clearance. A detailed report seeking Stage 2 environmental clearance has also been submitted to the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change recently.
Top officials said that land acquisition for the projects was also nearing completion. Nearly 95 per cent of the required lands was acquired.
The ongoing exercise to acquire land at some proposed reservoirs mainly at Mallannasagar would be completed by December end. Works at Tummidihatti project at Maharashtra border were also taken up as the project got all required clearances from the neighbouring state.
Canal work and construction of reservoirs were on fast pace in the last three months. Over 50 per cent of the works at the proposed Medigadda, Sundilla and Annaram barrage works were completed. Officials said that the major task before the government is to install the pumpsets and connect them with power supply network at the lift irrigation centres. From January onwards, these works would be taken up on war-footing.
Irrigation officials said that KCR wanted to provide water for next kharif season which begins from end of June. Before that the CM wanted to complete the project and dedicate to people on the Telangana Formation Day on June 2. To achieve the deadline, KCR will hold regular meeting with the irrigation officials and also visit the project sites and review progress of the project from time to time.
Since the government is all set to conduct first dry run of the project this month, KCR embarked on a two-day visit to the project sites. He will visit Medigadda barrage, Kannepally pump house, Annaram barrage, Siripuram and Goliwada pump house and Sundilla barrage. He will also hold a review on works with officials at Ramadugu near Kaleshwaram project on Friday. Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao and Special Chief Secretary to Irrigation SK Joshi will accompany the chief minister.
