Hyderabad: CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury stressed on the unity of the Left, secular and democratic forces in the country to defeat the growing communalism under BJP and RSS. Delivering his address on the inaugural day of the CPM’s 22nd National Congress here at RTC Kalyana Mandapam, here on Wednesday, he said, that the 22nd Congress is taking place at a time when the people and the county’s secular democratic moorings are under threat.
Holding the BJP-led Centre responsible for communalism in the country, he said, the reins of it were controlled by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. “The politics pursued by the duo have been pushing people into unprecedented miseries, and at the same time grievously threatening the unity and integrity of the country’s social fabric,” he added.
Stating that chilling incidents of rape of children in Kathua and Unnao reflect the dehumanisation of the society, he said rape is being used as a weapon for communal polarization, and this needed to be resisted and defeated.
Highlighting four key challenges faced by the country that need to be confronted with urgency and reversed in the interests of people, he listed them as assault of neo-liberal economic policies, communal polarisation, assaults on institutions of parliamentary democracy and constitutional authorities.
“That part, giving up an independent foreign policy of the country, the country has been reduced as a junior partner and subordinate ally of US imperialism. Besides this, the emergence of US-Israel-India nexus in global affairs need to be something to worry about,” he said.
The CPM leader further added that the Centre had failed to deliver on its electoral promises of creating two crore jobs annually, providing minimum support price to agriculture produce and one-time loan waivers to halt the growing suicides of farmers.
Apart from delivering a death blow to the economy with demonetisation and Goods and Services Tax, every segment has been opened up for foreign direct investment. And, privatisation of public sector has left people’s wealth placed in the profit maximisation for both foreign and big domestic capital, he said.
He added that attacks on intellectuals in the form of cold-blooded murders and against Muslims in the name of cow protection under the patronage of RSS and BJP, the deteriorating situation in J&K, distortion of Indian history and reducing it to Hindu mythology have been growing in distributing proportions since the BJP has come to power.
It was against this backdrop and in last three years, new links have been forged for joint struggles between the Left and the people’s movements from the socially oppressed communities. This was taken a step forward with the Telangana unit of CPI (M) forming Bahujan Left Front (BLF), he said.
Later, CPI general secretary Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy, addressing the congress, stressed a united fight to defeat the communal and neo-liberal policies. He assured that his party would partner with CPI (M) in building up people’s movements and mounting a united fight against such forces.
In his opening remarks, CPI (M) politburo member Manik Sarkar highlighted that the congress was being held at a time when the country was at crossroads, and the sessions would provide a direction and alternative to the country and her people. Reception Committee Chairman B V Raghavulu, CPI(ML) – Liberation, General Secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya, AIFB, Central Committee, Secretary G R Shivashankar, RSP Central Secretariat of National Committee, Member Manoj Bhattacharya, SUCI(C), Politburo member Asit Bhattacharya were among those addressed the inaugural session.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, senior party leaders Prakash Karat, Brinda Karat were among the other politburo members who were present.
