Hyderabad: Railway Protection Force (RPF) is likely to set up about hundred ‘Women Security Outposts’ in South Central Railway region to safeguard the women commuters. Recently, a model outpost was established at Begumpet Multi-Model Travelling System (MMTS) station with a Sub-Inspector level officer as the head of the outpost.

The Begumpet outpost, which was established in March, has a distinguishing feature as it has all the female staff. The newly proposed outpost would offer services exclusively for women, the officials said.

Speaking to The Hans India, B Rama Krishna, Senior Divisional Security Commissioner, Secunderabad division, said “The Railway Board has declared 2018 as the year for ‘Women and Children Safety’, and very concerned about the safety of women commuters. For their safety about 100 women security outposts are likely to set up very soon.

The procedure of recruiting staff is also underway.” The RPF has also set up a toll-free number, 182, which will function 24X7 alerting the concerned RPF personnel on the recipient of complaints, he said.

However, the helpline centre is receiving all sorts of complaints including smoking, drugging, missing luggage complaints, said the officer. In the view of safety of women passengers, RPF armed personnel escorting night bound trains and MMTS trains in the city, he added.

The initiative will be crucial to safeguarding the women from harassment and eve-teasing. A few months ago, a female software engineer who was heading to her hometown within SCR region from Chennai has jumped off due to unbearable harassment. Those who harassed her even beat her, besides passing vulgar comments.
