Hans joins Say No to Plastic drive

Hyderabad: In a first of its kind initiative, the Rajeev Nagar Colony in association with The Hans India started ‘Say No to plastic’ campaign here on Friday. Hundreds of residents and school children from the area came together and joined hands in saying no to plastic. Students and volunteers carried different placards that read: ‘Say No to plastic’, ‘Be responsible stop plastic’ and ‘Avoid Plastic.’
‘Plastic drop bin’ which was inaugurated by the Zonal Commissioner Harichandana Dasari on Friday at programme is for the colony people and any person who will collect more amount of plastic and dump it in the plastic drop bin will be awarded in the colony. The jute bags will be arranged on every Monday with the help of ‘Self Help’ group under GHMC.
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) officials, Jubilee Hills MLA Maganti Gopinath, West Zone commissioner Harichandana Dasari and Deputy Commissioner Ramesh attended the programme. Students from four schools - Nagarjuna High School, Castle Town High School, Jasmine High School and Ayesha High School (Urdu) with their teachers actively took part in the event.
The association is going to implement the ban on the plastic below 50 microns in the colony. Rajeev Nagar Colony is a Swachh Colony which received ‘Swachh Award’ for cleanliness from GHMC in 2017. There is a Swachh committee headed by the ladies who go around to the apartments and conduct meetings on plastic ban, segregation of wet and dry wastage and other civic issues.
Their main aim is to motivate the colony people to implement the ban on plastics. Zonal Commissioner Harichandana Dasari said, “10 microns plastic is not degradable even after 2000 years, people should not use plastics below 50 microns. The separation of dry waste should be done in one or two days in a week to achieve 100% separation of dry and wet.” She requested school children to implement it by motivating their parents to have free from plastic. Children are the builders of the nation, official added.
Jubilee hills MLA Maganti Gopinath said, “The initiative should start from the home itself. There are 172 schools in Jubilee hills constituency and want them all to be plastic free.” He added, “The Haritha Haram programme will be soon organised at Police Ground, Yousufguda request all the schools and GHMC officials including the Zonal Commissioner to participate in the programme.”
Deputy Commissioner Ramesh said, “We have already started ‘Freedom from plastic’ in Rajeev Nagar with the cooperation of Rajeev Nagar Welfare Association.” By motivating the fruit vendors and vegetable vendors on every Monday the sale of cloth and jute bags will be arranged with the help of ‘Self Help’ group GHMC.
