Khammam: Highlighting the importance of trees and plants for the existence of human beings, Carporator Y Balagangadhar Tilak said the prime responsibility of every individual is to increase the green cover by protecting plants and conserving forests.

The corporator was speaking after inaugurating the fourth phase of ‘Telanganaku Haritha Haram’ programme here in 37 division of Khammam on Tuesday.

Distributing the saplings free to the residents of 37 division, YB Tilak appealed to the people to participate in the green drive by planting the sapling and protecting them until they grow into trees.

Several drastic changes are taking place in the environment due to enormous destruction of forests in recent times which would affect the life of present and future generations badly in the coming days, he observed.

The plants and trees and forests acts as filters and purifies air by absorbing polluting gases carbon dioxide and carbonmonoxide released by factories, automobiles and industries and release oxygen which makes our living possible, he said. Planting of saplings in the open lands in front of houses will add up to increasing of green cover along with growing plants in natural forests.

Everyone must derive inspiration from Vanajeevi Dharapelli Ramaiah who planted more than one crore saplings and brought name and fame to Khammam district, he appealed. Kanaka Mahalakshmi, Bharati, Ram Reddy, Raheem, Rajeshwari, Murthy, Venkata Lakshmi and Ramya and others were present on the occasion.
